{Week One of Guest Bloggers} Hello Brie!

I fractured my wrist in two places last week, and it has been extremely hard to type with my left hand. I want to thank those that have volunteered to be my guest bloggers! If you would like to contribute a post, please email me!

{Brie Marie}

It's always the same with him.

Clock? 5:40. Shit.

"Hubby, what do you want for dinner?"

*shrugs* "Food."

*sigh* "Seriously babe, help me out here."

*shrugs* "I'll eat whatever."

"You're such a liar..."

"What?!"

*mocks him* "Ewww, this has mushrooms. Eww, the noodles are chewy. Eww, is that TINY LITTLE GREEN THING a piece of broccoli?! Eww, why does this smell like tuna? OH MY GOD, did you put JELLY on my peanut butter sandwich?!"

He glares. "Are you done yet?"

I continue the rant as I head off to the kitchen. "I don't even like mushrooms! But you cannot even taste them, or broccoli, when they're" pinches fingers "this freaking small! And who the hell doesn't eat peanut butter with jelly? Or doesn't like Oreos? Oh, and tuna salad is the SHIT. If you could plug your nose for two seconds and suck up the smell, MAYBE, you would like it!"

I'm in the kitchen banging pots and pans around and he's just standing there, glaring at me.

I drop a pan and say "Ya know what, no more! If you can't tell me something other than 'food' for once... and answer with something you want... so that for once you'll eat what I cook, then I'm not cooking dinner on those days."
 "Are you serious?" He asks.

"Yes!" I storm out of the kitchen, but not without turning around first to say, "And by the way, they're not 'chewy'. It's called AL DENTE!"

I am going to need Guest Bloggers!!! {Please Read!!}

{Long Story Short}

I was being silly with my 3 year old this afternoon, fell and broke my right wrist in two different places. My radius and ulna. I am going to be out of commission for a little bit apparently, and I am going to need guest bloggers. I would be ever so greatful. Please email me if your interested in helping out this gimp, lol!

Thank you!

Faces of Loss/Faces of Hope

I stumbled upon one of the many blogs I read, and I couldn't help to click on the link to the site: http://www.facesofloss.com/. My heart saddens when I hear about an infant loss, or even a miscarriage. I mourn for the women that go through this, and I get angry with the ones that choose to abort them.

Not many people know this, but I lost my big brother several years before I was born, and I lost my little sister many years later. I honestly don't know how my mother deals with it-- she doesn't talk about it. William was 8 months in utero, and Aspen was 6 months in utero.

When the doctors told me that it would be difficult for me to ever conceive; I found out July 2006, that I might have some hope. I went home to Texas, and found out that I was expecting. It wouldn't even be a week later that I would find out that I lost the baby. My heart was broken, and I was deeply confused. Furthermore, Mr. B was in California, and I was dealing with it alone. My trip home was shortened, and Mr. B requested me to come back sooner. (I had no idea how far along I was, because I wasn't regular.) I grieved alone for the next few months, (Hubby was in denial) and in the beginning of November, I saw my sister 6 months pregnant. She was glowing, and I couldn't help but to be a little envious. I put my hand over belly just to get a solid kick from my niece. I was excited for my sister, but my heart physically hurt, and I couldn't control how I felt about "what could have been".

Little did I know, that I had a miracle happening inside me! I found out on Thanksgiving 2006, that I was expecting Miss K. My little spit fire of joy. I love her soo much!

So, that is my story.

{Tap in Thursdays} Military Quarters

This is a new meme from Army Strong Spouses! If you are military spouse, feel free to link up! :)

{Military Quarters}

1. Name an installation you have been stationed.

Twentynine Palms, California-- This was my first duty station that I was actually married at. (I am prior-service.) It is right dab in the Mojave Desert.

2. Did/do you live on or off post?

I lived on and off base.

3. What would you recommend for newcomers to do about housing?

If there is a wait list, (mine was only two weeks) then, you have the option to go to 801 housing out in town. It has its pros/cons. I personally didn't live in 801, and honestly, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Check out www.militarybyowner.com I absolutely LOVE that website. I found a cheap brand new home to rent, when we moved off base. This website is useful for all duty stations.

4. Where is an inexpensive place you can stay off post while waiting for on post living?

I have no idea off base! But, they have lodging on base that is reasonable.

5. How is the housing office? Do you have any recommendations or specific people to speak with?

Lincoln Military Housing is a privatized company. You are not going to have a choice on what housing you want. They stick you where they can. If you husband reaches a certain rank that allows more bedrooms; make sure that they meet your requests soon. I found a better house off base that was cheaper than what the BAH was. Remember, Lincoln Housing is a business, and they want your money. I told them that I wanted to move into this nice house, and magically the wait list diminished from 3-5 months (they told me the same crud for 3 months at that point) to they have a house available for me.

6. How is the wait list?

That really depends on the time of year. If you never lived in their housing before, it could be very quick. However, if your family grows or your spouse gains rank, it could take a while.

They are raw, and intense; at least the ones I have are. My subconscious leaks out things, and I literally contemplate with "what the heck", all day long. So, here is my ode to Dreams, the good and the bad.

Happy Dreaming :)

{According to Miss K} When I grow up, my name is going to be Emily...

{Life According to Miss K}

My Story: When I was little, my dad and I were at our local laundry-mat, and I would be his special laundry helper. We would have alias that we would go by - just another one of my crazy imaginations gone wild - he was "George", and I was "Ashley". One day at the laundry-mat, my dad told me it was time to go. I looked at him like he was crazy, and I said, "I am not Holly, I'm Ashley." Mind you, there were a ton of people around gawking at my father. It made him uneasy, and I just gave a chuckle. (I was probably around four or five at this time.)

This evening, Miss K {3 years old, people!} had came up with an alias. Actually, she had been mentioning it for awhile, but I didn't pay attention to it until this evening. Miss K goes, "When I grow up, I am going to change my name to Emily, and I am going to be a doctor." Where in the world did my child even hear about the name, Emily? We don't know any Emilys'!  So, I remember fondly about my days where I would have my alias in my pocket, and have a good time playing, "Ashley and George". Is Miss K my "Emily"? I told her that when she has a daughter of her own, that she can name her Emily, but her name will always be K...
By the way, "Ashley" is Miss K's middle name. :)

So, please do add me there as well; however, it will be under construction until I find a designer. (I am looking for someone to revamp both!) Follow at: http://www.semperfionthefly.blogspot.com/

Siobhan Fallon's "You Know When the Men Are Gone" book review

Being a two-time deployment survivor, when I finished reading, You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon, had hit close to home. I was privileged to snag a copy of the collection before it hits the public on January 20. I honestly could not put the book down!

The fictional collection of stories center around Army base, Fort Hood, Texas. There are seven stories all together, with the characters intertwined throughout the book; each spouse has their own doubts, struggles, and strengths as they endure a long 12-month deployment. Amazingly, Fallon has caught the lives of military members in a shed of light that has allowed her readers to enter the mysterious world of the Army life behind closed gates.

Fallon showed that military spouses might share the same deployment, but every journey will be different, and no one will leave unaffected.

Even though this collection was geared toward the Army lifestyle, I feel that it will reach out to all military spouses from every branch of service.

Dirty-Thirty: Part Two {Featured Blogger: LCpl Bushard (Purganan)}

This is Part Two of the Dirty-Thirty series. If you are just now reading, please go to my link up to the top of my blog that says, "My Marine Corps Days.." to follow from the beginning. :)

I want to introduce you to another female Marine that made her journey with me through bootcamp. She had seen the quarter-deck just as much as I did. So, here is LCpl Bushard (now Mrs. Purganan, since she has since been married, and now out of the Marine Corps.)

Her Story:

After leaving my parent’s home which was a daily battle, boot camp seemed like a cake walk. I had asthma, a bevy of other physical ailments, but all I had ever wanted to be was a Marine. The plane I was on delivered a handful of us a day late and a dollar short, everyone else had received their gear, learned the gist of things – I scrambled to find my footing. The day we met our Drill Instructors, I knew it was going to be more fun than I had originally thought. Someone peed themselves on purpose, refused to train, others buckled under the pressure, and I remained a wallflower. They didn’t even know my name until week three – it was looking to be more pleasant than I had originally thought. Getting screamed at and being held accountable for other people’s problems were not exactly my idea of a good time, but I was used to it and for once it all seemed to make sense. My dad and stepmom were experts at making me feel like a useless piece of crap, so when then Sergeant De Leon, singled me out and seemed to have a vendetta against me, it wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle. I suppose I deserved it. One night, when we were seemingly getting a chance to let loose for once, I unleashed my spot-on impression of De Leon’s charismatic “march.” The woman looked like she was having a seizure sometimes while marching us, and as soon as I had mocked her, I knew I was going to be dead the next day. She had me on the quarterdeck doing “mountain climbers” for at least an hour. I have never hated a person more than I hated her after that day. When the others belittled us, were hard on us, it was for training purposes or because we genuinely screwed the pooch. De Leon just couldn’t stand me. I think she was just jealous of my fabulous rack (as I was one of the only girls who kept their boobs after a bazillion push-ups). It’s highly, highly probable that’s what it was.

I idolized our other instructor, Sgt. Gonzales. I remember most specifically, the immense pride I felt when then Sgt. Gonzales went through and named the people she thought deserved to be there. I beamed with joy for weeks that she thought I should be there. 20 second shower without soap? Sure! I deserve to be here! Oh, you’re going to dump our footlockers again? Awesome! I deserve to be here! … I wanted very little more than to be exactly like her as a Marine. She was hard on us, but I could see she gave a crap. As a Latina-lite myself, I understood her quirks. One of my funniest interactions with her actually had to do with my heritage. I had made friends with a recruit called Rocio Jaimes. We would clean and hang out, and since we both speak Spanish, it was our language of choice. One day, Jaimes and I had been cleaning the bathroom and I had to go out to the gear locker. I accidently bumped into Sgt Gonzales and, in Spanish, said our usual ditty of “good morning so-and-so, requesting permission to blahblahblah.” She looked completely confused, and once I realized what I had done, I re-said it all, this time in English. She stood there dumbfounded for a second and I slinked my way over to the gear locker – which happened to be right outside the DI hut. A few seconds later I heard a snippet of a conversation about what had happened. Gonzales saying, “She was speaking Spanish.” Knowing they were talking about me, I listened in. De Leon pulled up my record and read the part where it says I am Hispanic. “She doesn’t LOOK Hispanic” I heard Gonzales say, “Well, I guess in her hips and thighs, but she’s so white.” And, for the next few minutes the conversation continued, debating how I do and don’t show my Mexican. Gonzales said something about my attitude and De Leon made a reference to my boobs. Figures.

The last week was when I realized how much more scary the idea of leaving boot camp was than boot camp itself. Everything, even the squad bay thrashings and the lack of a decent shower, had become routine. I was lucky enough to have made a few friends and passed through everything without injury or failure. I wasn’t sure what was going to come next, and the idea of having all that freedom again kind of terrified me. My parents were hard on me, berated me, belittled me, but it was all out of scorn. These women, for better or worse, had made me into the best possible version of me, and I will forever be in their gratitude. Yes, even De Leon. After all, my mother always told me to have sympathy for those less fortunate – and less endowed.

Dirty-Thirty: Part One {Featured blogger: Sgt Johnston- McKitrick}

One thing that I love to blog about is my Marine Corps days, (which will become my continuing saga.. watch out for that!) and I like to find the humor of the craziness I had to go through.

I didn't go through it alone; however, I had quite a few other females that went through it exactly the same time I did. So, as I slowly contact all the girls from my bootcamp platoon known as, "Dirty Thirty", I would like to introduce, "Johnston".

I remember Johnston as being super tall and slender, and drove me crazy with her perfectionism. She was the one that made me want to throw her "One scoop and go!" at her in the chow line. It wouldn't be until we linked up a few years later, that we appreciated our time at Parris Island. So here is her take on what we went through...

Her Story:

At the request of Holly, I have sat down and sorted through all the painful, funny, and embarrassing moments that we shared during our thirteen weeks at Parris Island in 2004. You hear everyone in the military talk about how they made life-long friendships during boot camp/basic training. I scream LIES!! I know, I’m writing this at the request of a friend that I met during boot camp… the difference is we weren’t friends during it. I don’t know if anyone actually became friends with anyone there. Stress does not always bring out the best in people, especially when seventy women are all living in the same room for three months.

Any way, I digress… although at the time, boot camp was horrible, alienating, and downright miserable; looking back I have so many great and funny memories. Ask anyone who has ever served, especially a Marine, and they will tell you boot camp stories until you want to scream.

Our drill instructors were the most formidable women I think I have ever, and will ever come in contact with, but I don’t remember them being vertically intimidating. We of the Dirty Thirty had three Hispanic women who required us to say their names quickly and perfectly. Sergeant De Leon became very annoyed at us for how people squished it together saying “Deli On,” resulting in her yelling one night, “Big D Little E SPACE Big L Little E on” multiple times. Sergeant Gonzales got very irritated that when we had to write out information on duty every night people kept writing “Gonzalez.” This resulted in her yelling, “My name doesn’t end in ‘z!’ I’m not a fricking Puerto Rican!!”

I don’t know how entertaining this may be for anyone else… but at the time, this was so hard not to laugh at. I know how they felt, with my maiden name that I had the entire time I was in, nobody ever said/spelled it correctly. They would always use Johnson instead of Johnston, even when I would tell them “sTon” people would still screw it up.

Another funny story, which I promise is definitely more entertaining than name mistakes, has to do with why we were referred to as Dirty Thirty. We were Platoon 4030, Oscar Company 4th Battalion graduating 1 October 2004. In boot camp, there are specific methods to ask to do everything. If you didn’t say the long phrase correctly, you got yelled at and weren’t allowed to do whatever. Example: “Good Afternoon Ma’am, Drill Instructor Sergeant De Leon, Ma’am. This recruit requests permission to make a head call, Ma’am.” Just to go to be bathroom.

During the first few days of boot camp, no one wanted to step up and ask for permission to do anything. This led to many, many girls who needed to go to the restroom holding it, some longer than they actually could. In the first two weeks of boot camp, at least 4 women wet their pants, one of which continued to do so throughout our stay until the night she accidentally got the girl in the bed below her wet. I happened to be on fire watch this night, and all I remember is one of our shorter girls stumble into the center of the squad bay, arms and legs spread out to try and keep the wet clothing away from her body , crying “Fire Watch!! Philips* just peed on me!!”
*Name has been changed for camaraderie reasons*

What's for Dinner? Moroccan Lentil and Chick peas soup!

Photo from Wegmans.com

One of my biggest resolutions this year is to cancel out fast food, and cook every night for my husband. (Not that we eat fast food every night, but going out to eat, and fast food is was the majority in my house. When I do cook, I tend to go all out; my husband really enjoys my cooking. So, to 2011, I am going to let you in on what I have cooking in my house. I will take you through all the cuisines, and if you decide to take a recipe; let me know what you think!

So, here is what was on our table this evening...

To save time, use Produce Department cooked lentils.
